Kalamazoo River - The "K Zoo" offers some of the best Winter Steelhead in the area. Although the Kalamazoo River near Allegan is a very slow moving river, it does receive a large number of steelhead.

Rogue River - Located in Rockford, Mi - The Rogue River is also a small, more wadable river for Steelhead and Trout
.

Both the St. Joseph River and the Dowagiac Rivers are a short drive from Chicago. The Muskegon River is located an hour and a half from down town Chicago land. Indiana borders these rivers and makes for great fly fishing for Skamania and Spring Steelhead.

St. Joseph River - Number one in the nation for Skamania or "Summer Run" Steelhead. Skamania Steelhead peak during Summer Solstice. July and August are prime time.

Dowagiac River - Fall Steelhead and Skamania Steelhead during the Summer months. The "Dow" offers excellent wading opportunities for Indiana fly fishers. Waters are generally slow moving and offer a solid gravel bottom for Steelhead and Trout.

Both of these Rivers offer fantastic fly fishing opportunities close to both Indiana and Chicago. It's a great chance for Chicago anglers to fish close to home for big fish.

Steelhead are available on the both of these rivers from late September through early May. Skamania Steelhead are available form late June through December.

The St. Joseph River is part of one of the country’s most active and highly regarded Steelhead fishing destinations. It doesn’t hurt that the river is a world-class steelhead fishery, stocked with more than 250,000 fish by the Michigan DNR every year. A fish ladder at the dam in Berrien Springs allows steelhead and king salmon to make their annual journey.

Large Numbers of Steelhead in the St. Joseph River in Michigan. The steelies appear to be starting their spring run about a month early, much to the delight of winter fishermen. Steelhead action is hot from the mouth of the river, at Lake Michigan, south to the Indiana state line. Hotspots along that stretch of river include Berrien Springs and the Buchanan Dam. Anglers are having success from shore closer to Chicago Fly Fishing Outfitters.
